Barges Can Be A Good Way To Transport Cargo

Pretty much everything has to be transported from one place to another. There are all kinds of ways for items to be transported. That can include things like trains, trucks, and cargo ships. Items can also be shipped by barge. Barges are generally used on lakes, rivers, and canals. A barge is basically a large flat-bottomed boat. They generally don't have their own engines but depend on tugboats to push or pull them along. Oftentimes, one boat may be providing the power for a long line of barges that are secured together in a line. It would be like a train on land with one engine pulling many cars along behind. Barges can be an efficient way to move cargo, but they have to be loaded and unloaded. One way to do that is to have machines that do the work. Doublehandling means that the cargo is handled more than once. Doing that slows the process down and is really inefficient. Doublehandling can happen in a lot of ways, including having the trucks unloaded, carrying the cargo to a holding site, and then loading it onto the barge. Some machinery can do that all in one shot, depending on what kind of cargo is being handled. For example, for a coal barge, the truck can be unloaded directly to the loading machinery, which will then dump it in the barge so that it can be transported.

The more machinery and the more automation the process has, the safer it is for employees. They don't have to handle heavy cargo, which means that they are at a lower risk of hurting themselves. The more the cargo gets handled, the more risk of injury there is. There is also a greater risk of damage to the cargo the more that it gets handled. So, having a machine that handles everything, or at least as much of the process as possible, is going to be safer for the employees and the cargo. 

Barges are a good way to make sure that cargo gets from Point A to Point B. It's important to make sure that the barges get loaded and unloaded in a safe and efficient way.
